In cases where teeth and surrounding tissues are degraded or completely destroyed for various reasons, the prepared materials used to repair or replace them are called prosthesis.
While the prosthesis tries to regain the lost functions of the patient, it is also aimed to correct the impaired speech and improve the aesthetic appearance. In this way, while the oral health that has been largely lost is restored, individuals who have to live with missing or ruined teeth in the society are also psychologically supported. Because individuals who have to live their lives like this (even for a while) first of all forget to laugh.
This causes functional disorders as well as a loss of self-confidence in people. It is aimed to improve people's quality of life with various prostheses made for these types of patients.
Over the years, teeth wear out at different rates as a result of people eating, chewing, swallowing, and grinding their teeth at night for some reasons. In addition, some parts of the teeth may break as a result of caries and accidents. In such cases, the lost structures of the teeth are replaced with prostheses called crowns.
These crowns used to be made using porcelain, acrylic or metal alloys produced specifically for dentistry. Nowadays, with the recent developments in Dentistry, especially in porcelain, extremely natural looks can be achieved (Low 151 porcelains, Empress, In-Ceram, Procera, Zirconium).
Prosthetics made as a result of tooth loss are generally of two types;
1. MOVABLE PROSTHESES that can be attached and removed by the patient whenever desired
2. FIXED PROSTHESES, such as crowns and bridges, are placed on the remaining teeth in the mouth and cannot be removed by the patient.
The term Removable Prosthesis is generally used to mean that the patient can put on and remove the prosthesis that replaces the missing teeth. This type of prostheses must receive support from the soft tissues surrounding the teeth as well as the remaining teeth. As a result of the load placed on it during chewing, the prosthesis sinks into the soft tissues in the mouth to a certain extent, that is, it moves.
